Multi-daylight press for SGL Carbon in Meitingen:
New project within the scope of a successful partnership
6-daylight press from LZ for fiber materials
SGL Carbon has decided to increase the production capacities for the “hot pressing” of fiber materials at its site in Meitingen. To this end, a high-performance 6-daylight press including a concept for the upstream and downstream production processes was designed and realized together with Langzauner.
Key technical data on the 6-daylight press:
- 6-daylight press incl. mold handling
- Buffer store for mold batches
- Thermal oil system incl. planning and execution
- Dimensions of the press molds per daylight: 1,700 mm L | 1,350 mm W | 250 mm H
- Designed for the production of hard felt panels
The 6-daylight press with an overall height of 4.5 meters enables a shortening of cycle times and a massive increase in production capacities.
Partnership of two experts in the composite materials sector
A close partnership has united SGL Carbon and Langzauner for many years already. Together, the two companies have consistently expanded and perfected their expertise in the composite materials sector as an important future technology. Langzauner is the strong development partner for high-tech presses, which we adapt perfectly to the needs of SGL Carbon in special-purpose machine construction.
“We are united with SGL Carbon through a long-standing partnership as well as through our passion for the constant further development of composites as materials of the future. The in-depth understanding on both sides of the specific manufacturing processes provides the perfect basis for realizing new special-purpose machines in the shortest possible project times and with the usual perfection,” explains Martin Schachl, Global Sales Manager at Langzauner.
High speed at LZ: The new composite press achieved in 10 months
The speed of the partnership is also evident in the turnaround time of the latest joint project. Within 10 months, the concept was developed into a finished multi-daylight press, which, after commissioning, optimally complements the production processes at SGL Carbon in Meitingen.
“In addition to our specialization in composites, our greatest strengths are our speed and flexibility. At Langzauner, we carry out all the development and production steps in-house, which makes us more agile and better as a company. Our long-standing partnership with SGL strengthens this momentum by ensuring perfectly coordinated project workflows,” explains Martin Schachl, commenting on the rapid pace of the project.
Perfect logistics for commissioning
The assembly of the 4.5-meter-high 6-daylight press in an 8-meter-high production hall was quite challenging, but mastered with ease.
“The new multi-daylight press from Langzauner was delivered on schedule and set up in building 203. The press height of 4.5 m in combination with a hall height of just under 8 m was a major challenge, but with the help of everyone involved, and especially the two crane drivers, it was mastered with ease. In some places, there were only a few centimeters between the crane boom and the hall roof. Nevertheless, the press and its ancillaries were safely placed in position,” enthuses Stefan Kronthaler, PMSE project manager at SGL Carbon.
At Langzauner, our dedicated logistics and project management team ensures the development of sustainable logistics concepts and perfect solutions for the installation and commissioning of special-purpose machines. Once again, they showed what they are capable of with this project.
Langzauner would like to thank SGL Carbon for the long-standing partnership and the trust in our special-purpose machine construction. We look forward to many more joint projects to make composite products even more successful internationally as enablers of future technologies.
