Vertical integration at Langzauner:
Part 1 – Machining technology

At Langzauner, vertical integration is a key factor for success as an international manufacturer of special machines. Our in-house production enables a diverse range of special solutions which are always developed in line with our customers’ process requirements.

Our series on vertical integration starts with an insight into work preparation and machining technology at Langzauner in Lambrechten:

Optimized production planning and production control

Stefan Strasser, our Head of Production Planning & Production Control, uses precise calculations of throughput times and optimized personnel planning to ensure that all production steps are completed on time and with excellent quality. This gives him a consistent overview of all components and process steps. “We are also increasingly reliant on digitalization tools in production. To give an example, in production we use screens to keep all responsible colleagues informed of the major milestones for the respective projects. All work steps are documented digitally with the aid of a barcode system on our job tickets. This is just as relevant for our customers as it is for our internal processes. We take great care to constantly optimize our work processes in order to deliver top performance,” says Stefan Strasser, emphasizing Langzauner’s dynamism.

Machining technology at LZ: Production kick-off

After the work preparation department had fully planned the construction of a customized machine, the first work steps will be carried out in our production area for machining technology:

Machining technician Tobias Friedwagner explains: “In our area, there are rarely even two items which are the same. In special machine construction, we need good programming skills for the CNC systems in order to manufacture parts precisely. For this, we need a lot of practical experience. You often know exactly when you have to start up the system carefully and when you are dealing with critical areas.” Jan Strasser adds: “When faced with challenges, we can rely on the knowledge within our team. If we notice that our initial attempts are not yielding the desired result, we consult with the team. Experience and creativity always help us find the right solution.”

Stefan Strasser stresses the required commitment: “The ability to work independently really matters at Langzauner. Our employees are all highly committed and trained to develop customized solutions. Time management is also a team effort. Everyone makes sure to notify everyone else early on if they realize that any additional work will be needed to keep to the schedule. For us, open communication is key. Everyone is committed and also heard.”

Specialized CNC systems for special machine construction

In addition to experience, Langzauner also boasts state-of-the-art production facilities. Six high-performance CNC systems (3- and 5-axis milling machines) and one large portal milling machine enable the manufacturing precision that makes customized Langzauner machines a reliable high-end solution. “We have designed a range of systems that optimally meets our needs. The dimensions of our CNC systems in particular are different to others: for instance, we need longer, narrower systems to manufacture cylinders for large presses,” explains Stefan Strasser.

“Best practice” – In-house cylinder production at Langzauner

Unlike many other press and special machine manufacturers, Langzauner in Lambrechten produces cylinders in-house. “We are experts in cylinder production with know-how that would be impossible if we were just buying parts. The cylinders meet our customers’ requirements 100% and are also cheaper to produce in-house than if we bought the parts. We manufacture the components according to individual specifications which makes us both faster and more flexible,” explains Stefan Strasser. Tobias Friedwagner adds: “Cylinder construction requires high precision. All measurements must be checked conscientiously and recorded in a measurement protocol.”

In addition to the ability to precisely adapt the cylinders to the given process, in-house production also allows us to provide spare parts to Langzauner’s customers more quickly.

Short round of questions relating to machining technology

What would you say makes Langzauner a better employer than other companies with large-scale series production?

Tobias Friedwagner: “The fact that we are a family business. Practically everyone knows each other, and the work atmosphere is great. As a machining technician at Langzauner, you face new challenges every day and need to come up with creative solutions.”

Stefan Strasser: “After work, we often meet up for a quick chat. In other companies, the employees need to make special arrangements for this, but with us it just happens organically.”

Why should you apply to work at Langzauner as a machining technician?

Tobias Friedwagner: “If you enjoy working on creative solutions, this is the place for you. What you will need is logical thinking and the ability to work in a team. If you’re open-minded, you’ll feel right at home with us.”
